Southern Doves, A Legacy of Tradition
    by R. Michael DiLullo
The breeze woke me from my semi-sleep-like state. The heat was beginning to dissipate, although, the sun was still high in the late afternoon sky. Through the shimmering mirage-like waves, I could see two camo-clad hunters taking-up their position across the field. My two female English Springer Spaniels “Bess” and “Flo,” lying one on each side, had managed to find what limited shade was available. I leaned back against the roll of hay and checked my watch. It was nearly 4 p.m., the magic hour was approaching, the sky would soon be full of doves. I would have plenty of targets and the dogs, hopefully would have birds to retrieve.

    Force Fetch
    by Amy Dahl, Ph.D.
Force Fetching Retrievers is difficult, especially when you lack experience. When a dog does not respond, do you need to apply more pressure, less pressure, ease up on requirements, shorten the session, or perhaps bear down and keep trying until he gets it? Even experienced trainers can find it hard to read a dog that is doing nothing.

George Hickox School of Dog Training
    $64K Question - George Hickox
    by George Hickox
Put a pack of gundog owners together, and odds are that conversation will be wholly focused on training, hunting and bragging. Throughout my years of involvement in such talks at lodges, camps and our gundog training schools, people have asked me the gamut of dog questions. They've ranged from, "How do I get my beagle to point with style?" (to which my answer was, "I don't know") to "My dog is four years old. Is she too old to train?" Following are some of the more frequently posed queries and my thoughts on each.

    Canada Geese
Canada geese are the most common and identifiable goose. The head and neck are long, with a notable white face patch. Bill, legs, and feet are also black. The black rump has a white V, and the undertail coverts and belly are white. The wings and back are dark brown, and the breast feathers are dark to light gray with buff tips. Sexes are similar.

    Canine Dental Hygiene
Although dogs do not get cavities, they do benefit from a regular oral hygiene regiment. It is important to keep your dog’s mouth as clean and bacteria free as possible. A healthy mouth includes regular brushing and cleaning to prevent the build-up of plaque and calculus on the teeth. Plaque is a combination of food particles, enzymes found in the saliva, and bacterial growth. Calculus is a hardening of plaque deposits, which over time have built up forming a hard sticky black, brown or yellowish-gray deposit. Calculus build-up is the major cause of periodontal disease in dogs. It causes the gums to become inflamed, which may also cause bleeding, and if left untreated could eventually lead to infection and tooth loss. A professional with the use of a dental tooth scaler or ultrasonic cleaner must remove built-up calculus. (Continue)

Pro-Ears Dimension Series Sporting Clays (DSC)
In the past, I have always used a pair of disposable sponge plugs or ear inserts to protect my hearing when shooting. While these are probably the most common and inexpensive hearing protection on the market today, they seem to always be missing from my shooting bag or covered in pocket lint when I need them. As I became a more active shooter, I realized it was time to take hearing protection to the next level. My search eventually moved me from the traditional sponge earplugs toward electronic hearing protection (that allows me to hear normal and low volume noises, such as conversation while protecting my ears from loud harmful sounds) -- enter the Pro Ears Dimension Series Sporting Clays (DSC).
