Southern Doves, A Legacy of Tradition
    by R. Michael DiLullo
The breeze woke me from my semi-sleep-like state. The heat was beginning to dissipate, although, the sun was still high in the late afternoon sky. Through the shimmering mirage-like waves, I could see two camo-clad hunters taking-up their position across the field. My two female English Springer Spaniels “Bess” and “Flo,” lying one on each side, had managed to find what limited shade was available. I leaned back against the roll of hay and checked my watch. It was nearly 4 p.m., the magic hour was approaching, the sky would soon be full of doves. I would have plenty of targets and the dogs, hopefully would have birds to retrieve.

    Force Fetch
    by Amy Dahl, Ph.D.
Force Fetching Retrievers is difficult, especially when you lack experience. When a dog does not respond, do you need to apply more pressure, less pressure, ease up on requirements, shorten the session, or perhaps bear down and keep trying until he gets it? Even experienced trainers can find it hard to read a dog that is doing nothing.

    $64K Question - George Hickox
    by George Hickox
Put a pack of gundog owners together, and odds are that conversation will be wholly focused on training, hunting and bragging. Throughout my years of involvement in such talks at lodges, camps and our gundog training schools, people have asked me the gamut of dog questions. They've ranged from, "How do I get my beagle to point with style?" (to which my answer was, "I don't know") to "My dog is four years old. Is she too old to train?" Following are some of the more frequently posed queries and my thoughts on each.

    Woodcock
Members of the shorebird family, woodcock thrive in the uplands, migrating north and south throughout their range. They are solitary and fly alone, not in flocks.

They are round/oval, stout, and camouflaged in light and dark brown, rust, and black. The long and flexible bill aids in retrieving earthworms and grubs deep in the mud. Large eyes are set high and far back on the head; crown is thickly barred in black; and breast and belly are light tan. Tail feathers are black and white (luminescent in low light).

    Canine Phosphofructokinase (PFK) Deficiency
Canine Phosphofructokinase (PFK) Deficiency is an autosomal recessive genetic disease that inhibits a spaniel’s ability to convert sugar into energy. Spaniels affected by PFK will often exhibit signs of exercise intolerance. Additionally, PFK destroys the red blood cells that deliver oxygen and remove waste throughout the spaniel’s body. This destruction of red blood cells causes the dog to become mildly or moderately anemic and also shows signs of exercise intolerance. (Continue)

    Etch-Marc Max 5000
Whether you’re pressed for time and/or training partners the Max 5000 is a tool that professionals and amateurs alike will find as a valuable training aid.
The Max 5000 can be set up in seconds and launches five bumpers without being reloaded – a real timesaver when compared to traditional bird launchers. From the first shot of the Max 5000, you can’t help but notice this is no ordinary remote launcher – even the propane shot used to propel the dummy sounds like a real shotgun blast. The Max 5000 launches highly visible black and white dummies that “wobble” in a near perfect arc that gives dogs a good look at the mark.
